can I put my wine at the show?
« on: October 28, 2013, 07:54 »
Hi, can please anyone tell me if it's happened before?
I manage to make some wine with grapes from my allotment. Every year we got a show/contest and I been told my wine can not compete. Reason are from "I need a licence to produce wine" (wrong!) or "no one can taste it".
Is now three years I try to do it but always been refused as no categories cover wine.
We got carrots cakes or rhubarb jam as product from allotments but no wine.
Any help from you lot is welcome.
Thanks, Renato

Welcome to the forum.

No you don't need a licence to produce homemade wine. That's pure daft! Plenty of shows have homemade wine.

Problem is, it's down to the organisers of the show as to what categories they have. There is no legality to say that they must have it in their show, so I'm afraid that we can't really help, it's down to yourself and others that may want to show it, to persuade them othewise.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Possibly they don't know anyone of sufficient talent to act as judge.  The only thing you cannot do with homemade wine is sell it.

Cheers,   Tony.

It used to be the case that you could not use it as a raffle prize. Not sure if that still stands or not.

Our allotments open day has a Tombolla stall and there is wine & beer as prizes.

We're talking home brew. Commercial stuff is OK.

You cannot sell home brew as no duty has been paid on it. Likewise it used to be the case with raffle prizes.
