horse manure question
« on: March 24, 2011, 20:28 »
having read the previous topic on horse manure as i understand from the comments made horse dung collected out the field is not as good as stable dung mixed with straw  :(

so i have been spreading dung  on the lottie all winter have just ploughed the lottie the question is i am going to use a low nitrogen granular fertilizer and lime the ground i thought the fertilizer would supplement the horse dung if its not as good as the stable dung

the only part of the plot that hasn't had horse dung on it is where i intend to set with spuds whats your thoughts on this topic

You usually put spuds where you've added manure  :(

And you don't put it where your roots are going - spuds not being root veg.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Straw doesn`t add nutrients to the manure, if you`re going to compost it straw acts as an accellerator once it gets wet and speeds up the heating up process.

How I like to see steam rising off the compost heap on a cold morning.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I think this might actually be correct - when the horses are locked up in the stable overnight or thru the day then they poo and pee in the same area and the straw soaks it up making it rich in nitrogen as well as having all the nutrients from the poo. If you just collect the poo from a field you will get some nutrients but will not have pee soaked straw.

Just my theory.

can i suggest if you are collecting horse apples as a chore from the fields.. take them home put them in a hessian sack with some nettles /comfrey or such and put them in a bin of water, the hay/straw/grass etc will make a reasonable liquid fertiliser when mixed with the other ingrediants  ;)
