I know!  :D  Fools!  We challenged them over the rule that chickens were not allowed. We went to read the by-law and found nothing. So that was another one chalked up to us  :)  They make half of it up!

Know your rights and don't be afraid to stand up for them. Tugging your forelocks  should have died out by now

I can't see anything in the legislation that refers to a right to erect a shed or greenhouse, unless I'm looking in the wrong place (which is quite likely!).

We are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so sheds/greenhouses need planning permission.

The council doesn't have any problem with us having a shed and / or a greenhouse, it is just that they have decided to stipulate, without giving any reasons, that they should be commercially produced and not home made.  I don't see what is wrong with their existing policy that they should be well maintained, secure and safe.   It just seems as if they want to impose a petty rule for no good reason.

A quick update.  Following a meeting to discuss the new policy, home made sheds and greenhouses will still be allowed, but we have to seek permission before putting them up.   They do like their rules, but we are pleased.

It say you are permitted to keep chickens in one of the Allotments Acts.  No by-law can overturn an act of parliament.

There's no right to sheds or greenhouses enshrined in any laws, so councils can make up their own rules for them.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Bit awkward if you haven't got a car ;)

Some people here, leave basic tools in a dalek  ;)

Years ago, when we started our allotment, there was a charming old boy who just left his basic tools, which were all he used, in a plastic bag on his plot! He didn't have a shed or anything!

When he retired, he gave us his Canterbury Hoe, which we still use!

And now, after all these years, we're farming the same plot that he did!

Funny isn't it - they managed to grow veg without all the paraphernalia we tend to have in our sheds nowadays  :nowink:

I left mine in a crate on my plot for a year before I had a shed. I managed perfectly well and nothing went walkies. I do notice I have a shed load more stuff now I have a shed...

In my car boot ...  :)

Me too

I have my allotment spade, fork and short handled hoe permanently in the boot.  There are a few sheds popping up on our site now, but some people also use the dalek idea.

My canes live propped up between 2 big wooden compost bins and the wheelbarrows also live on site.  One was given to me free and one was a huge £1.50 from a car boot.

Everything else travels back and forth with me, although I have upgraded recently from a bucket, to a posh bendy plastic trug  8)

If they even think about trying that with evil shed mkII the Emporer might destroy the planet.  Same thing happened to Alderaan  8)

Despite the luxury of being allowed a shed, security issues mean that my decent tools still live in the boot of my car. It is helpful to have somewhere dry to store fertilisers, clothes pegs and netting  etc though, and as our site is so far from human habitation, the council are quite unconcerned about the size of sheds. Some are enormous, as are some polytunnels.

However, as long as they do not mean any adjoining plot is in shadow, we all seem to rub along well enough.

I think it is shame when there are efforts to reduce the individuality of our plots --- unless of course that individuality involves masses of seeding weeds of course
