guinea pig bedding and poop
« on: December 25, 2012, 19:38 »
Hi, does any one know if guinea pig bedding (spoled) and poops can be used on the compost heap?

Many thanks and Happy Christmas to you all.

spoled meant soiled, used, dirty straw hay mixture!

and in reference to your offer of excess waste, you could just stack any extra & it will rot down on it's own, although it is kind of you to offer it to others

Used this for years in our compost heap mixes. I used shredded paper for bedding rather than straw (saved eye injuries) and it all rotted very well indeed

Hi Julie

Rabbit poo which I'm sure has the same qualities as gpigs is classed as a cold manure - you can throw it straight on to the plot or put around your roses as a good feed.

I've got a bucket of rabbit poops I've been saving and they will be lining my bean trenches this year.

The hay will make a good brown ingredient to a green compost pile but any uneaten seeds can be a bit of a pain and will need to really rot right down

Hi Ema - The bunny poo is high in nitrogen and would do better on crops like sweetcorn that want nitrogen - beans make their own so dont really need it.
