Guess what I just did
« on: March 25, 2010, 18:50 »
Was gonna finally get around to making my Raspberry jam.  Sterilizing the jars causes me more worry than making the jam.  Stupidly I put the lids in the oven as well as the jars to Sterilize.  Didn't know or read that they had a plastic lining.  So jam ready, jars ready, lids burnt to a cinder on the inside, and toxic fumes eminating from the oven.

Scrambled around to find some old used  lids rather than the nice new ones I burnt from lakeland.  Put the old lids, which I did find, around the house into some boiling water and now I just  hope for the best.

Must say though jam tasted ok except very sugary.  The raspberries were my Autumn Bliss.

Don't make that sound LOL it frightens the life out of the dog.  He runs and hides.  Mind you a camel making a noise  on the TV frightened him the other day.

What a shame

I bet they smelt horrible  :(

reminded me of the time OH put fish & chips in the oven to stay warm while we unpacked the shopping -- they were in polystyrene trays

I think you had the oven rather too hot! The lids should be fine and the boiling water method works well too.

I was wondering at what temp the oven was on. I often put plastic lined lids on the tray with the jars to sterilise.

I can't remember now, I thought I put them on really low, but wondering now if I had a moment and did them higher.

Bizzarely my cuz in New Zealand saw a post I made about this and said she didn the same thing a year ago, she reckons its genetic. LOL

I have a dishwasher so when I need to sterilise jars for preserving I chuck them all in there and try and aim for the wash to finish at about the same time as whatever it is is ready. If the load finishes earlier than the preserve it'll be fine if the door is kept closed.

The lids are just as happy in the dishwasher as the jars are  :)
