Yolk colour
« on: July 07, 2009, 08:22 »
I now have 3 of my 5 girls laying daily  :D
The 2 young warrens eggs have a very pale, anemic looking yolk and the ex bat's is a lovely orange colour. I also noticed the white in the warrens eggs was 'cloudy' and not clear like the ex bats. And one of the warrens is regularly laying double yolkers. Is any of this normal?

Sorry don't know about the yolk colours but hens which have just come into lay often lay double yolkers until they get a bit more practice in.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I've found my yolks get darker as the hens get older  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

I thought yolk colour was dependant on the diet - ie more yellow coloured food (corn etc) = yellower yolk.

yes it is when they get into the swing of things but I have found my new laying younger ones tend to lay lighter coloured than the older ones even though they are all on the same layers pellets.

I give mine spinach or cabbage most days, as well as free range, so that makes their yolks more yellow.  Certainly do not need colouring when baking, the natural colour comes through!
Cloudy white?  Sorry, don't know.  Probably OK for beginners.

must admit TMG that even though they free range all day they don't seem to eat as much vegetation as the others but they do tuck in with great gusto to sweetcorn when I give them some  :D

My fresh eggs usually have cloudy whites. After a week out of the fridge they go clear. It is normal and may be due to dissolved gasses.

Thanks everyone. Will try leaving some out of the fridge  :D
My 12 yr old won't eat the 'home grown' eggs, he doesn't like the idea of where they came from ie 'their butt'. Where on earth does he think the supermarket ones come from?  >:(

Hi,
I think the eggs are not better not kept in a fridge. Someone will probably be able to tell you the reason, something about the fridge destroying the natural defence of the egg against bacteria. I don't know how long they keep out of the fridge - we eat our within days.
cheers

If you sell surplus eggs, do not store in the fridge, but in a cool place.  My under stairs larder is ideal.  I do not store any in the fridge, even for my own use.
