What can I grow up a rose arch?
« on: March 04, 2009, 23:05 »
I bought courgettes this year (never even tried them never mind grown them) thinking vaguely my little boy could grow them up an arch and they'd crop hugely for him. Anyway,on looking at the courgette packet its a bush, so thats a no go. DD has sent him sone spring onions which hes looking forward to planting, and I also want a big wow factor veg for him for the rest of the season, Pumpkins will grow in a bed for him because he wants giant ones

A long explanation for what can I get for him ?

How about 'Golden Sweet' Yellow-Podded Mange-tout pea from Real Seeds. Purple flowers and lovely yellow pods. Link here; scroll down the page until you find it.

Butternut squash...... as well as the bush variety there's a climber - grows rapidly and the fruit is fun to watch as it develops through the summer.

I grow this through my runner beans...... great discovering the squash as the beans die back in Autumn.

There is a climbing courgette plant. i grew them last year, and like everyone elses courgettes, they did really well. T&M do them in their catalogue but you can probably pick them up elsewhere too.  good luck.

I got 2 cheap rose arches, linked them together with canes and put netting over. The plan is for a bean arch with possible cucumbers.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

If you get too many they make beautiful wine - very grapey
If at first you don't succeed..... cheat!

It worked well for me. I wanted space for runner beans and wanted butternuts so combined the two.

The two rose arches with runner beans on, is what i did last year. I got my squash along the bottom by accident tho............it grew so fast it ended up sharing the bed with the beans

I bought a grapevine (Vitis vinifera it says on the box) from Wilks for 3 quid yesterday & planted it this morning at the side of my arch. Last yr I planted Telegraph Improved cucs but the weather was lousy so only produced 2 cucs & I don't have a greenhouse cos not got the room.
Might try runner beans up the otherside of my arch, got cucs germinating indoors ....

Why not cordon apples or pears?  They look lovely in blossom, and not too bad the rest of the year either.

Im thinking of these for my fences (especially pears) Stripeycat, eventually anyway, the rose arches are just those cheap ones from Wilkos and arent intended to be permanent (though they may be so handy Ill buy better ones) just a quick thing so my lad gets more keen (I hope!)
