Nodules on Flower Bulbs
« on: November 17, 2021, 15:53 »
Don't know too much about flowers, more of a veg man. I recently removed these bulbs (see attached pic) from the ground that were in a small flower plot I have on my allotment, in order to relocate them. There are small nodules attached to the bulbs, is that ok, or is it some kind of fungus/growth which shouldn't be there ? They were quite wet when removed. Needed to know if I should bin them and start again with new. Thanks for any advice.

Bulbs do reproduce by making small bulbils, but, I've never seen that many on each bulb.

It's difficult to see from the photo, but it looks a bit like Crown Gall, to me.

Are they gladioli ? If so I think they are baby bulbs

Thanks Snowdrops, think they are Gladioli, what should I do with them now if so. Should I store them to dry in the greenhouse, or put them in pots, or both  :), what about the nodules, do I take them off or leave?

Mumofstig, they look as though they can be removed, as opposed to being a part of the bulb/root as shown in your link. They look a bit different to that.

I’d remove the babies & put them in a seed tray with gritty compost & keep just damp over winter & when they start to out grow their space pot them on & grow on for a few years until they are about the same size as the parent plant, then plant into flowering positions. The original I’d just keep in a dry airy place & replant in spring. I tend to leave mine in situ, I’ve been lucky so far but it’s normally recommended to get them up each year.
