A new year and a few brave pioneers are off already  :)
Title: Re: The Floral Parade 2022: orchid Coelogyne 'Unchained Melody'
Post by: Subversive_plot on January 08, 2022, 20:39
I've had this hybrid Coelogyne for about 5 years now. It blooms reliably in January to February each year, and occasionally later in the year as well.

Sorry . . . I attempted to attach a photo ... It didn't.  So,here it is now.

I think I attached the photo correctly this time!

The flowers on this one start out pinkish, but fade to butter yellow.  Both with maroon spots.

This one grows in a shallow terracotta tray, filled with volcanic rock chunks. It sits in full sun next to the tomatoes during the summer.

There is a good fragrance, noticeable most strongly at night. Like a mixture of vanilla and cloves

Wild crocus in a haze over a large flowerbed.  They seed everywhere and I know that would drive some mad, but they are so lovely I forgive them

Snowdrops also doing their bit to cheer things up and a pot of Iris reticulata are a drop of blue heaven  :D

After the awful weather on Wednesday when we had heavy rain all day, spring returned yesterday  :)

The tulips opened out in the sun and looked like they were having a good time.  The tiny Hepaticas were also giving it their all  :)

Sweet Williams looking lovely  :)

They are plants from last year that I saved when I emptied my summer pots out and replanted this year, but you would never know they are technically ‘past it’  :D

I've got loads of roses out, and they look fab from a distance, but the rain is spoiling them, so when I go for for closeups, it's just not worth taking pictures. sob sob

This year's  Vincas.

For two years in a row, we have planted exactly none of this. They sprout from whatever seeds were dropped during the previous year.  The result is quite a hodge-podge of different colors and flower patterns, but we like it.

The only maintenance we do is to pull weeds occasionally, and toss down a little fertilizer when we get around to it, and water when it's really dry.  A benefit is that Vinca is one flower the deer won't eat. We do cut some occasionally for indoor flowers.

Sorry Leslie, I was interrupted while making the post.
Besides, I wanted to get the color saturation on the blue wheelie bin in the first photo just right.  You know me . . . perfectionist.

Autumn means cyclamen season in my garden. They have seeded all over the place and very welcome they are as well.

Probably my favourite plant Euphorbia Milii. What I like is they flower every day 365 days a year. When I was a kid they were named Euphorbia Splendens, sadly someone decided to rename them. Common name is Crown-of-thorns.

Took a while to find a pink, I have red and pale yellow but the pink is a modern variety. Always good to see in the depths of winter outside.

Just brought them in from the summer house today. They enjoy some time in the garden in the summer. Easy to propagate and colour all year.  :D

Thank you all! They've done really well in the shadier parts of the garden this year and the good lady wants me to grow them again next year.

Impatiens do prefer shade, not sun lovers !     If you have got a dull shade area, the white ones will stand right out.    Mrs B

I collect outdoor Fuchsia's and they are looking well at the moment. Had to get some snaps before the frosts. Variegated one is 'Lady's tears' new to me this year, only a small pot from EBay but now its huge. The red one is a favourite named 'Red Ruffus' . I also have a large bed just for them and a separate building for cuttings and younger plants.  Not sure if I can mention the nursery's I use so best not for now.

Lovely  :D

You're free to mention praise for nurseries, assuming that you don't have any connection to them.

This one is called 'Star Wars' only got it this year from Roualeyn specialist nursery in North Wales. I also use Ballyrobert Gardens in Northern Ireland. If ever you are looking for any plant check out their A-Z plant list. I shop online so have not actually been to these places. I must make the effort one day.

Not flowers I admit, but cute all the same.

I knew my cacti were happy in the bowl arrangement I potted them into last year as they have all grown like mad, but check out the guy at the back on the right. Awwwwwww

Goodness, that’s a skyscraper of a cactus, you’re going to need an extension to the roof soon

Here’s some from my garden today & the marigolds were in the poly tunnel at the plot, but I’ve  pulled them up as some were going mouldy! I don’t think the water Lilly will flower though  :nowink:

A tiny but lovely plant today from one of my terrariums.

This is a jewel orchid and the flowers are not the showy part of it, but it is notoriously tricky to grow so I am just delighted it is thriving  :)

Check out the foliage in the second picture, which is stunning. This terrarium is fairly new so is still going through its mouldy phase, but it will settle and become a little enclosed eco system soon enough.

It sits on my ‘mossy forest’ terrarium shelf with others that are slowly filling out. Just the place to spend a rainy afternoon tinkering about (and it keeps me away from the seed tin)

Ns, is that jewel orchid Macodes petola?
Title: Re: The Floral Parade 2022
Post by: New shoot on December 29, 2022, 16:52
Yes it is Macodes petola.  I had a gift card for an online houseplant site so splashed out.  They cost about £15-£18 to buy over here for just a 6cm tiny pot with a rooted cutting in.

I am pleased to say mine has grown a bit and sprouted side shoots which are growing across the terrarium floor and rooting into the substrate, so I might be on the way to producing extra plants  :D
