Title: A Bad Day for Calamity Jane
Post by: mrs bouquet on November 28, 2021, 14:53
The gadget arrived for the TV so that I could watch instead of reading sub-titles.  Also a very loud alarm clock.
A pal came here to set the tv thing up.  It didn't work for me at all, so disappointed.  But Andy set the alarm. He said I will need a degree in Rocket Science to operate it.  He plugged it in behind my bedside cabinet.
I had kept the box so packaged the tv thingy.  Then went to alter the alarm clock time and couldn't even press the pads.  I tilted the cabinet forward to take the plug out and a drawer slid out onto my shin, at the same time the table lamp toppled over onto the glass cabinet top and chipped a lump out of the glass.  (Now repaired with clear nail varnish).   I repacked the clock, and rang the seller and got a number to use on the return form, which I managed to download and print.   Put the parcel in the car for post office and dropped car key between the drivers seat and centre console.  I came in got the torch and squeezed into the footwell.  I couldn't even see it.  Banged my head on the steering wheel coming back out !
Found spare key and drove to a garage where they know me.  He laughed and came out and opened the back door.  I said, no it was in the front.  He put his hand under the back of the front seat and handed me the key and laughed alot.
I then went to the post office - £7.95 for second class parcel delivery.   When I got home, there was an email from the seller telling me there is a charge of £15 from my refund for restocking items.  It was there in very very tiny print.
So my try to get into a modernised deaf peoples world failed dismally and cost me the money to pay friend for time spent here.  £7.95 to send goods back, and a £15.00 charge.     Ah well, all part of lifes rich tapestry.     I couldn't make this day up.  !!!!   Mrs Bouquet

Oh what a pain!

I'm not sure that the £15 restocking fee is something they're really supposed to charge.

Firstly, if you bought it online, you're entitled to 14 days I think to return it without any reason.

If it is faulty / not fit for purpose / not as described, then there is a much longer time to reject it and return it.

Charging you £15 seems an unfair contract term, particularly if the product is faulty.

If you have the energy, I'd suggest contacting Citizens Advice.

I don't think the goods were faulty.  It is me thats faulty   :D  I had another email today from their MD, asking me what I thought about the products and services.    He will be hearing from me tomorrow.  It probably wont make any difference, but it'll make me feel better.  Also when I go to the hearing clinic for my new moulds, I shall make sure they know.  It was them who gave me the brochure and suggested.  I think I have been too deaf for too long to try and make changes now.    Tried and failed.   ::) ::)  Mrs B

I contacted the fire service because I kept thinking I could hear an alarm bleeping.  He came today.   He has replace all the batteries with 10 year life ones, and the same with the carbon monoxide one.
He has also fitted a small smoke alarm to the ceiling in the hallway.  If it detects smoke it triggers a gadget which is now on my bedside table, and flashes, it also has a pad which he has put under the mattress, which will vibrate as well.    So really doing a better and safer job than the alarm clock.   He was very pleasant and it was all free..   Onward and upward.    Mrs Bouquet

That's one of the useful services provided by the fire service. It saves them callouts to things that might well be disastrous but which can be prevented by good alarms.

Fire service is lovely, we called them to ask what we ahould do about a moving chimney pot in high winds. He said couldn't get the machine close enough to remove and too windy for a fireman, which we agreed. Did say if it came through the roof they could cover it  :D
