Lavender Cuttings
« on: July 13, 2012, 18:18 »
I've got some cuttings, about 4 weeks old. They have taken nicely but I have recently noticed most have sent up a single bud. Should i cut this off to encourage rooting or is it ok to flower?

This helps the plant to put all its energy into producing side shoots instead of flowers.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I sowed Lavender at the start of this year, I get random shoots that grow at a quicker rate than the rest of the plant, sometimes they shoot out to the side. Sould I consider trimming these shoots.  :)

Probably more than a bit of a generalisation, but many English lavenders naturally form nice rounded clumps with just a bit of a haircut after flowering; the French ones I've "rescued" from a friend's garden  ::) tend to grow a bit more randomly and can get a bit woody and straggly.

My advice is to research the actual variety you have and trim accordingly.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I've got quite a few lavenders coming on from seed and cutting and yes the do tend to throw out a long shoot or two. I go over all mine with a pair of scissors. It may seem drastic now but it makes better plants in the end. :)
