Next Plants.
« on: June 25, 2009, 09:39 »

This is my first year growing and im beds are crammed full of little plant's which is very exciting.  :D

But i've realised that reasonably soon i'll have some space freed up, i have lettuce that are just about ready interplanted bettween my brassica's and my calabrese/summer cabbages will be ready for harvesting reasonably soon.

Now obviously i could use the space for more lettuce, but anyone have any better idea's? perhaps something ready for winter? The Bed is a nice sunny south facing bed it seems such a waste to leave it empty till next year. (10ft by 3ft)

How about squashes/Pumkins. It's not too late to pick up some reasonably priced small plants from the local garden centre. Not what I do, but if needs must...

I guess it depends on what veg you like, how about swede, butternut squash, marrow??  They can all be sown direct at the moment   :)

I already have tons!!! of courgette/marrow plants a few too many tbh however

I do have 2 small butternut squash plants i've started growing from seed which are about 6" tall atm, I do have space planned for the squash, but ... if i held them off in pots i could use the squash space for some winter cabbages. (i had some plants leftover i kept incase those naughtie birds/slugs did anything to them)

I don't think the brassica bed will be compleatly clear for at least a month, some of the cabbages are ready i plan to have 1 for tea tonight :D so there is space freeing up as we speak but the calebrease still has a way to go so it's not a compleatly clear bed yet.

i guess i could plant the squash's in now (pulling up a couple of cabbages to eat over the next few days) hopefully the bed will free up enough by the time they need the space?

Veg wise i'll eat everything!  :D and frankly i don't care about the rest of the family they are all fussy little  :tongue2:

Oh i do have some parsnip seeds i bought them and then decided my soil might me too stoney, is it to late for those? i guess i could risk a few see what happens...stupid stoney soil i did my carrot's in pots just in case.

might as well give them a go, nothing to lose I don't think parsnip seeds keep very well so probably wont be any good for next year, try to give the ground a good fork over first though - good luck  :)
