is it too late for french/runner beans?
« on: June 17, 2008, 12:04 »
What with children being ill and fitting in a holiday and having OH's family visiting for three weekends i forgot to sow my beans.

I have a polytunnel (my 1st year) so was thinking I'd grow some in there but would it be too hot.

So is it too late, did think i'd go mad with beans to make sure what space i have left on the plot is kept full.

Its not too late for either.
June is an ideal time for sowing both.

I didn't sow my runner or french beans until mid June last year and whilst the crop wasn't magnificant i did get a fair amount of both.
It will probaly be too hot in the Poly tunnel but you could just start them off in pots in there.

To my cost I discovered beans like it cooler not hotter !!  (they all rotted too moist!)

... best sown straight into the ground if you ask me!! At least 2" deep!

We did a bit of an experiment this year and tried direct into paper pots, soaking for a day or two and putting beans into the airing cupboard in damp kitchen paper....

the ones in pots took at over 2 weeks to show themselves, the soaked ones didn't do much at all but the airing cupboard ones were showing roots within days, and were potted up and in leaf within the week!

Definately the way I'm gonna do all mine next year.
