Autumn veg
« on: November 08, 2020, 11:50 »
I planted some broad beans, some garlic and some onions in my (new) polytunnel in modules last month. They are growing well, but in the way as I want to work on the beds in the Winter. Will it be OK to just plant them outside now or do I need to harden them off or wait for Spring ?

You should be able to harden them off and get them planted if they are in the way.

Planting directly outside from the poly tunnel is a risk as a cold snap could knock them back.  You could put them under fleece for a week or two if you want to go ahead with this option  :)

The garlic can be transplanted directly, the broad beans are best left where they are unless they are the hardier varieties Aquadulce or Aquadulce Claudia and you have experience of growing these from an Autumn sowing successfully in which case transplant them as soon as possible so that they can get used to the colder conditions.   Very few people start their onions before December but I have this year and mine are under cloches and a cold frame.   But this is an experiment so I would play safe and keep them in your polytunnel until February.

Thanks. I'll leave them in the tunnel then.
