Butternut Squash picked unripe
« on: September 11, 2009, 20:58 »
I gave my Mum some Butternut Squash Seeds this year as they are not
very popular in Germany (at least not in our area) and I thought she was missing out.  ::)

I told her, as I gave her the seeds, that they are ready once turned orange!

However, yesterday she phoned me to tell me that she'd picked her squash as she felt it was big enough now  and of course it's still green...

I there any hope it will still ripen?  ???

Peel it cook it and and eat it.

Can't be any worse than an unripe marrow - commonly known as a courgette.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Did the sunny window sill work?

My butternut squash was sooooo late in fruiting that I have only 2 pitifully small and still very green squashes and I am dying to try them - and need to get them off the vine before it gets really frosty!

Thanks

All i can say is that the greenish one that i picked did change colour on the sunny window ledge :)

I didn't fancy trying it green somehow :tongue2:

I have to check with my Mum but last time I asked her she said it's slowly changing colour.

I picked two of mine yesterday, still green, and have out them on a sunny windowsill.  So here's hoping.

Fingers crossed then, I have two that are barely an edible size and everso slightly yellow but I am dying to try them, may have to pick them this weekend as I really can't see them growing any more now  :(
