Title: Growing in a polytunnel
Post by: gowing238 on October 16, 2009, 18:57
Hi,

I would love to get as greenhouse to grow tomatoes, cucumber and chillies/ peppers etc in, but the credit crunch will not allow it at this moment in time!! But funds can stretch to a decent sized polytunnel. Was wondering can i still grow the tomatoes, cucumber etc in a polytunnel in the same way as i would a greenhouse?

Cheers!

Of course, grow in the same way. I prefer my poly tunnel to the greenhouse i had as they dont get so hot.  And if cash is a bit tight you can easily make your own tunnel from scaffold tubes and plastic water pipe  :)

Ive got a small bought polytunnel at home but am gonna build a bigger scaffold tube/water pipe one on the lotty, and intend to cover 2m of the sides with debris netting and the rest with butterfly netting in an attempt to protect my brassicas from cabbage whites next year

Wow! That polytunnel is soooo impressive! Thanks again for the link. Maybe I'll try for a mini-mini version (when I've built my fruit cage...)

I got a 30' x 10' glasshouse off eBay for £400 (in addition to a 12' x 10' one I had bought off eBay a year earlier :) ), but I don't see larger ones come up very often.   An even bigger one was sold recently at a garden-clearance auction near here, fetched about £400 too.

Up to that point I had been planning on a plastic tunnel for cropping, but I think this has worked out better (much easier to keep a larger greenhouse cooler than a small one ...)

If you are having a bored moment! there are some pictures etc. on my Blog

Thanks its a 37.5lb mirror, and yes ive been once in 3 years for various reasons but not just gardening. I used to use it as a way of escape from the ex wife , but now she is an ex i dont have the urge to get away  :D

"You can't surely have a normal job and do this??"

I work from home, self employed, so I can juggle my hours :) Summer time I knock off at 5:30pm and come in from the garden at 9pm most days, so quite a lot gets done :)

I'm getting a bit tee'd off that knocking off at 5pm at this time of the year isn't getting enough done before it gets dark ... but this past 7 - 10 days I've been in the garden all day just briefly checking emails etc a few times during the day in case anyone really needed me! and the garden is pretty much ship-shape now - the wet and frost will arrive soon. Once the clocks change <Spit!> I can crack on with my work.
