I've been using the bog standard garden twine for every thing so far ( marking out beds, boundary fences& the like), but the stuff i've got  seems to break the moment i put any strain on it. Is there anything a bit stronger that  i could use?

I use the plastic coated twine - I have the light shaded green - you can see then.

we use the thin rope from the £1 shops , 50-60 yrds long , not bad for a £1, its lasted 5 yrs so far , only broke once when my wife tried to rotovate over it lol lol lol

Yeah this gear was a pound for 500 meters. Now i know why.

In defence of the stuff you have been using it is supposed to break easily. The idea being that you break a piece off by hand and tie up your plants.

It is like that so that you don't need to carry scissors and knives around, just the string.

I use the garden twine mostly to tie in plants to supports, so I want it to be weaker than the plant stems (or if a cat tries to climb the plant, it'll break the plant rather than pull it off the wires).  For fencing, you really want fence-wire and tighteners (I can't think of the proper name at the moment!); try an agricultural shop.  Or look into diamond link fencing (or a wooden option if you have the cash), or hurdles if you have a source of withies.  If you want to put plants against an existing fence or wall, you need wire and eye-hooks - run the wires as a permanent structure, then use your cheap twine to tie in the plants to the wires so you can move the ties as the plant grows.  Thin cord is good for a planting line and for marking out ground, and synthetics stay bright white against the soil rather better than natural fibres.
