Title: Chilli string
Post by: barbarella on March 04, 2010, 10:27
Last summer I picked up an ailing cayenne chilli pepper plant from Homebase for a couple of quid, nursed it back to life but rather neglected it over winter in the greenhouse.  It had loads of ripe chillies on it which have dried out a bit, so this morning I picked them, threw the plant on the compost heap , threaded the chillies on a piece of black thread and voila!

If you do this, make sure you don't put your fingers near your mouth or eyes without giving them a good scrub first (I speak from experience ;))

Can I also suggest you dont go to the loo for at least 2 hours after either - like you, I speak from experience

One thing - why did you through the plant out?  I've got loads of chillis growing from a plant I overwintered from last year.  Reckon I will be harvesting in about a month  8)

I take it you mean number ones Kermit?  I shall have to bear that in mind :).

I threw the plant out because I had let it dry out and I thought I had to put it out of its misery.  I've got some seedlings coming along to replace it and this time I think I will cosset them a bit more.  Some months ago there was quite an amusing discussion about overwintering peppers on Gardeners' Question time.  Ann Swithinbank was going into very helpful detail about the best way to do it, and as you can imagine  John Cushnie (bless him) just told the questioner to throw it out and get another one!

I believe a  chilli string like that is called a 'ristra'.

Just thought i'd share the information :)

I can totlay agree with the hands mouth & eyes thing. I grew some amazingly hot chillies in a pot a few years ago & accidently got the jiuce int one of my eyes when cooking with them.

You eyes hurt & the natural reaction is to rub them, in doing so I transfered the jiuce into my other eye.

I was blind for about 3 mins & in agony for at least 20 mins so.

 NOT RECOMENDED......

You ever heard of pepper sprays? It's what the police use to disable drug-crazed lunatics and guess what the main ingredient is? :) And the recommendation is if you get the stuff in your eyes just don't touch them. No amount of rinsing with water or anything else will make it go away, only time, and rubbing or rinsing just increases the chance of reintroducing more into the eyes. Gordon Ramsay reckons if you burn your skin with chilli the best thing is lemon juice, but I've never tried that.

Lovely picture, good technique!

(If you've also got a good technique for finely chopping dried chillies without them shooting all over the kitchen please let me know!)  ;)

Yes, they did and I picked quite a few already, before the final harvest.  Not bad for a 'reduced for quick sale' sad looking plant eh?

Good point, scissors are a no-no as I found out.  Usually I try to cup one hand over the chilli as I cut, but if anyone has a better tip I would like to hear it.

I whizz mine in the food processor.....sounds a bit noisy but seems to work.

Or if they are dry enough put in a small poly bag and whack with the rolling pin

I dry my chillies and then just crumble them into the cooking. But ... they don't seem to stay dry enough to crumble (even in plastic bag). So I have to re-dry them periodically.  maybe freezing would be better (possibly after first drying?)

I'd love to have them in some sort of pepper/salt grinder to be able to just use them (and not have the associated nose/eye-rubbing Ahhhhhh! forgot AGAIN!! issues I have at present - or even the half-asleep pee in the middle of the night  :tongue2:

I have to get the seeds out first - otherwise they are way too hot for me and mine.
