Carrot's have the Fly
« on: June 20, 2008, 10:53 »
I have two rows of Early Nantes which were in the Fly resistant pack from T&M. One row (the first planted ) has started to go yellow and when I pulled a coupple up they have the fly. the other row looks ok but they are still very small.
Are they all doomed ?
I notice the row where I have been thinning is the affected row. I havent touched the other, if I leave it alone and dont damage the leaves do you think they may be ok ?

is it too late to put another row in, I have flyaway and resist a fly packets of seeds which I havent tried yet

What time of day was this?  did you notice they smell strongly of carrot when you do this ???  Best to do your thinning lete in the evening ... I always mix my carrot seed with spring onion seed too as an additional  deterrant.  Alos mix with love-in-a mist or crorn flower ... blue confuses the nasties!

Two reasons for doing this ... firstly as stated above but also helps to spread out the carrot seed and reduce the need to thin!  8)  :D

I did the thinning in the evening as has been suggested, yes there was a smell of Carat but I took all of the thinings away. the only problem is sometines the tops broke off leaving the thinning in the ground and no doubt producing a beacon to little flys.

if I pull uo the whole row and re plant would this work or are the wiggly's in the ground now ?

One reason I never thin my carrots!

I've sown in June before & had a good crop, so I would say it's not too late. I would sow in a different spot if possible & protect them with a physical barrier such as a polythene fence or enviromesh.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I never thin mine either. This year, I am growing mine in a bath raised up on bricks and it seems to have done the trick - no sign of the fly.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

I usually find carrot seeds are big enough to be able to sow reasonably close to what you want.

Covering with fleece has worked well for me, keeping the flying * at bay.

If the soils pretty good and you don't sow too thickly, you shouldn't need to thin them. Once they are starting to be ready to eat, take them as if you were thinning a bit, so the last ones get more room to grow. They seem quite happy to push and shove each other and still grow.

Cheers,

Adrian

If that doesn't stop the blighters nothing will.

I can take the top off and weed hoe water without letting the fly in (famous last words or what   )

I do this and it works for me, makes the seed so much easier to see, and I dont relly need to thin
