Time to sow courgettes, squash, French beans etc?
« on: April 17, 2021, 09:17 »
Seems a late season this year and I’ve only just put the spuds in, but was thinking mid April is about time to start sowing tender stuff indoors. Anyone else started yet? I may just do a small advance sowing and see how the weather goes.

Great minds Nobbie, sowed some courgettes and squash this week. Unfortunately the window sills are full though so some slightly warmer nights would help me crack on now.

Nope they can wait a couple more weeks. I went out this morning on way to allotment hut duty and there was definitely a chill in the air at 9.15 am despite sun and blue sky. It's oop north here and we do things behind you soft southerners with regards to growing

I'm definitely holding out a little while longer, I don't really want vulnerable seedlings out in the greenhouse until the night time lowest temperature is around the 10c mark. Even though they wont suffer below that, they'll definitely not grow as fast as they can.

I'm, about to sow dwarf French beans which will be planted out in the greenhouse. The tender stuff destined for a life outdoors can wait until the May bank holiday weekend, by which time I hope the winter nights will be finished and we get our temperate climate with intermittent rainfall back.

Yes to courgettes as I like them to get to a good size before planting out to reduce slug attack risk.

Squash towards the end of this month.

French beans not until early May.

I still have some window sill space left for courgettes and squash but French beans will go straight into cold frame after chitting and emerging from the compost in their paper pots.
