recycling boxes
« on: January 20, 2012, 09:47 »
Over the last few months our local council have changed our bins for recycling, from the square green plastic boxes to wheely bins. This is good for us as I have now collected all the neglected/unwanted green boxes put a few extra holes in the bottom given them a good pressure wash and voila planters for free idea for strawberry's and lots of other uses well chuffed.
Sadly I wonder how many are just dumped in a skip!
If God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of food

I know the kind of box you mean, we had the same kind down south. In a similar vein, fish boxes...

...are easily obtained here. We have used them a number of times to grow salad leaves. They're great for successional sowings of cut and come again type leaves. I'd imagine they'd be good for annual herbs too.

So far I have mint in 1 and strawbs in 4 and another few ready and waiting in the wings.
I haven't thought about spuds but will go for that for next Christmas spuds!

My spring onions did well in those sort of boxes last year too.  To start them off I covered the box with an old bit of double glazing to make a hot box!!!

I did spuds on my rooftop garden last season - the boxes were great.. A real neat way of planting in confined spaces.
