Asparagus and new no dig beds.
« on: March 01, 2019, 20:08 »
Hi. Ive had my allotment covered in membrane for over a year. I think I have got rid of most of the weeds apart from bind weed and possibly couch grass returning via the shared paths.
My question is if I can safely put asparagus in to a new bed which has got 6 inches of well rotted manure in it or should I wait another year to try to weaken the bind weed even more ? I obviously don’t want bind weed in with the asparagus if I can help it.
Thanks for any thoughts

Asparagus resents disturbance, so if you think there is still bind weed or couch in the bed, I would hold off for now.

It is a long standing crop, so soil prep is paramount.  I have a raised bed at home with it in, which is no-dig by default, as the asparagus is there.  It gets an annual manure mulch - not 6 inches worth as the crowns need sun and warmth, but it does very well  :)
