Title: onion sets ...and sand??
Post by: nitiram on March 20, 2006, 16:38
Have had a 'tip' passed on to me by some one my son in law works with...Soon as folks find out you have a lottie all sorts of tips and advice keep coming... Anyway, this bloke reckons that to stop the birds pulling out the onion sets after planting he covers the tops /row with a thin layer of sand  and this deters the birds.

Wouldn't sand burn the sets? Does it work???

I'm sure it will do no harm but I don't know how much good it will do. The birds tend to go for sets when the shoots appear and the shoots will have to come through the sand.

No harm to try but I think a net would be more effective.
