Chinese Orchid
« on: November 25, 2020, 15:55 »
My birthday one is outside my back door, but under cover.   Should I put it in an unheated greenhouse for winter, or do something else with it.   Thanks,  Mrs Bouquet

Is it a cymbidium orchid Mrs B?

They need to stay protected over winter, so an unheated greenhouse is not going to be warm enough. A cool bright place indoors would be better.

They do need a spell over autumn with a drop between day and night temperatures to spur them into making flower spikes for the following year, but temperatures under 10 degrees centigrade are damaging.

I am not sure what it's name is, but it was very pretty with lovely white flowers going a bit pink at the edges.
I'll  bring it in and try and find a suitable place for it, although I am sure it will get fairly cold in my house during the night  :D  thank you,  Mrs B
I have just looked it up and it is that, Dondrobium.

Dendrobiums are more tender than cymbidiums Mrs B, but overnight temperatures indoors should be fine.

They need good light but not too much direct sun  :)
