Electric or Petrol?
« on: February 19, 2011, 03:01 »
Hi All,

I`ve just got a plot on my local allotment and have a lot of `good` ideas that i would like to try. My main problem at the moment is which way to go for power. Would I be better going for petrol driven strimmer, tiller, ect or spend my savings on a 1.5 to 2kw generator and use the kit I`ve already got at home, (plus the power tools for building jobs), or will the electrical gear not be up to the job. It`s only a half plot. The chap that had it before me has kept it well dug over and there isn`t too much grass areas to keep tidy. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks, Paul.
I can remember when it were all fields round `ere.

To be honest, Paul, if it's a well dug half plot with not much grass, I wouldn't be looking at any sort of powered tools, unless there are health reasons. Seems a bit like a sledge-hammer to crack a nut.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi Paul.
I've never come across an electric tiller that has much in the way of grunt, but as DD has said, if it's been well dug over before the soil should be pretty loose anyway.
A lot of people go for the small mantis tiller, and there are many back threads about them. I think just about everyone says they find their's very useful.
If it were me, I'd go for petrol tools every time, I've never had much faith in machines that can burn out rather than stall if the going gets too tough. :)

Thanks for that. I`ll have a look at the back threads for the Mantis and start convincing the OH that I need some new toys.  :)
