Title: Villiers Mk12 air filter cleaning

Hi, I'm working On a 1954  Monro tiller with a villiers Mk12 engine fitted.  It has a canister type air filter fitted. Can I wash out the filter top part with petrol before refilling the oil bowl and reassembling. I'll attach a photo so that you have an idea what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance.

I guess it will be the wire wool filled type. If so, that is what you do. I usually blow that type out with an air line after washing.
