Heated Propagator
« on: February 07, 2018, 13:48 »
I was lucky enough to get a double heated propagator for Christmas  :D - I've successfully started my chillies off but is there anything I should avoid that doesn't like the heat? I'm about due to plant my leeks this week and was wondering if they were best just left on the windowsill as usual?

Any advice gratefully received!

Thanks

Leeks only need gentle warmth. Avoid brassica like the plague!

Over half a century of growing and never found the need for one.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Funny I was just out sowing some seed and wondering the same.  Thanks for the guide on brassicas I will move them out into the unheated propogator.  What about sweet pea and peas?

Neither! Seeing as you can grow sweetpeas over winter in a cold frame or greenhouse and throw peas straight into the ground, they don't warrant a heated propagator. Think in terms of plants that will need warmth later in life, peppers, chillies, tomatoes, cucumbers and the like.

If you mollycoddle seedlings that don't want warmth, you're going to end up with weak plants.
