hi all,

just had a look at my shallots and the tops are all down flat on the ground now and not as green as they where

do you think its about havest time for them?

also when it comes to laying them out to dry, do i need to do it inside or wont the rain hurt them if they are laying outside?

thanks

They could well be ready to harvest. although mine are not ready yet.
It'll be ok to lay them outside.  I usually lay mine on a wire frame off the ground so the soil falls off and they dry easier. And seperate the bulbs.

They make pickled onoins to die for. Leave overnight under a layer of salt, wash off the salt and in the vineger with a spoonfull off pickling spices and after a couple of weeks your done.
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"

Until the tops and roots have totally withered to brown and the bulbs have dry papery skins to them. Cut off the roots and tops before storing (or pickling)
