Frost - am I too late
« on: November 10, 2006, 16:12 »
I'm just wondering if I'm too late to plant out onion sets to over winter. We had a week of frosty mornings last week (I'm down in Surrey).

I also picked up some raspberry canes and strawberry plants in a bargain sale but didn't get them in before the frost, will the soil be too cold now?

Thanks for your help.

The first year I had the plot I was eager to get something growing, I was told that the local garden center had onion sets so off I went and bought a load, put them in the ground (mid Novemember) and watch them grow, along came the frost, and they were and have been the best crop of onions I have had, since then I have always put them in around the begining of March and looking back they have never been as good, so go for it. i have also just put some more canes in, again something I have just done without asking or reading up and they have always survived. Most are dormant at this time of the year so I dont think it does any harm but I am sure someone who knows more about soft fruit than I do will give good advice.
