Title: Shallots
Post by: Beetroot queen on May 16, 2013, 12:46
We picked some up reduced awhile ago( didn't note down when)  but we stuck them in our garden under the fruit trees. The soil is awful in our back garden nothing grows at all apart from the trees, but the shallots look great, the green is about a foot tall  ( is it seriously meant tonget that big)

I am very proud onions and shallots don't do well on our plot but these look very good, should I be doing anything extra for them.  ???

They sound like they are doing great.  Just keep them weed free and maybe give them a little food.

What's the recommended food for them.

I hate to talk too soon but our garden doesn't grow weeds either, tell a lie I have removed two in fifteen years. They grow I the grass which is fine by me as long as they are green  ::)

They dont need a lot of feeding at all if you added when you planted them out. A bit of general fertilkizer like growmore or BFB can be applied about 6-8 weeks after planting and then a bit of potash a few weeks or so later.. they love potash as do all onions.
