Asian Pear Tree...Will it ever fruit?
« on: February 22, 2007, 21:56 »
Hi All.

I was about to purchase an Asian pear tree yesterday, but i'm concerned if it will ever fruit.

Like most people i'm short of space in the garden, but i'd like to 'give it a go'.

Does anyone have such a tree and have any advice how best to deal with it.

I already have a normal pear tree which may help pollinate it.

Any help greatly appreciated...Many thanks if you are able to help.
Tom.

Hi Tom welcome to the forum, as far as I can remember asian pear tree's are self fertile and don't grow as big as normal pear tree's, I think all pears prefer a bit of shelter from cold winds. But I can't help further than that.
Some one might grow one on here so keep checking.

Aisian pears grow and fruit quite well in the London region. I would assume they are equally hardy as the normal pears. Try it and see.

Hi Milkman....
Thanks for the welcome to the forum....i don't have a ride-on mower my lawn isn't huge but my mower is self propelled....good to hear from you.

Hi Richyrich7....Thanks also for the welcome....i heard that although things that say they are 'self fertile' some do even better with a pollination partner....i've no idea about Asian pears and probably am going to try them and see how it goes...

Hi Eristic...I'm a little further south than London, i think you've made up my mind for me....Asian pears here i come...

I'll post how i get on (as soon as/ if i see) anything that might look like a fruit.
Tom.
