Well I've never done it before, only added manure and compost, thought it might be good for the bare patches left during the winter if only because green is a prettier colour than brown and might keep down the weeds.  But then I am not into hard work either and if digging them in is that hard maybe I won't bother, I'll see how I feel in the autumn!
Plant your garlic in Aug/Sep/Oct and the bright green shoots will cheer you up all thru' the winter.

Or grow wallflowers if you have extra ground (and no clubroot).  Plenty of greenery, flowers in March.  Bottom of the compost heap when you need the ground.

I favour Phacelia I grow it cos it's very pretty ... and for the flowers which attract the friendlies especially the bumbles  .... they are blue ...

But if you are still interested ... I am a chart you could have ... or buy Joy Larkcom's "Grow your own Vegetables"  it's in there  :D

Hungarian grazing rye is a * to dig in. I'm thinking of using the field beans for mulch.
This year if I overwinter anything it will be broad beans.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I'll probably go for something that I can eat at the end, like garlic, but might add some flowers just to be pretty.  Then again I might just add a pooh mulch because I don't have a direct view of the back garden from the house anyway unless I take the dog out so I guess brown isn't going to depress me that much!!   But I do like the garlic idea, eat a lot of garlic in this house.  :D

Do both ... garlic grows very well through a manure mulch.  The ground they use is freed up in July.
