azada or right angled fork?

Anyone used either of these tools?

Have lots of bramble roots and couch grass to clear from most of the allotment, plus general digging over and am thinking of asking for one of these for my mothers day present!!! Any comments on these or other useful tools would be great!

I've found a medium azada a very useful tool for rooting out brambles and general digging. You can get bigger ones but I would say they might be a bit heavy unless you are really strong. You can get through work really quickly and I haven't found any difference in the quality of the dug beds from those dug with a spade.
They're quite expensive but I think they're worth it.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I too have an azada and I would really recommend it. It's also great for earthing up potatoes. If you have really deep bramble and nettle roots, a mattock is probably better for deeper work (some of our roots are 2-3 feet deep).

Azadas are a lot kinder on the back.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

I have (and use) several Azadas(sp?).  If you can find a spade (as in the playing card spade) shaped one, they're the most useful.  About 20 cm wide is optimal, but a smaller one with a weeder fork on the back is invaluable too.  The English spade that I bought with me is still sitting in the garage, shiney and new.

I use an Azada, after you get the hang of it its miles faster then a spade.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

I have just got one of each for my new lottie, found that the fork is better for digging rough areas with bramble roots and couch grass, but the azada is better for trenching earthing up etc, far easier than a fork and spade

My new azada arrived yesterday  :)  I'm hoping to give it a try at trenching this weekend. I hear there's a knack to using one, can anyone give me any tips  :?:

I bought both the middle of the range azada and the right angled fork from Get Digging and for couch grass and bramble roots, I would definitely use the right angled fork. It sort of combs out the roots rather than cuts them, which makes it a lot faster to remove them. And you can use them in either handed fashion so you can work for longer before needing a break. The azada is good for removing those big clumps of grass and digging weed free soil, but the fork is more useful all round. Once you get these tools, you won't want to use anything else. After all, the rest of the world use them, so they can't be that bad!!

An azada (or chillington hoe as I have) - it has the added bonus of being unusual.  When my shed was broken into and my 'regular' tools (spade, rake, shears and fork) were stolen my chilly hoe (hmm, sounds like a cold night in the red light district) was left behind.  Presumably they didn't know what it was so just left it, despite it costing more than the other tools put together!!!

Also, it is much better excercise than a spade (in my opinion)
