possible over watering of plant or the flower has got wet, a dip in the temperature or the flower has been and gone?

its not really a flower. its the flower bud that has just formed. no, they didn't get wet.
maybe due to over watering or  a temperature drop. the plant will later produce new flower buds right?

if it is a nice healthy plant, then you should get more  ;)  Thinking about it now, some of the first flowers don't always open - the plant might have got conned into thinking it was summer with the recent warm temperatures, and then had an afterthought when it went chilly again.

No, silly, I sowed them on me birthday, the day before we left. (30th April - put in your diary).
