Title: Most popular vegetables grown in allotments
Post by: thebutlers on October 30, 2021, 17:17
Dear all,
I have been asked to give a talk about pests and diseases of vegetables and fruit, and would like to know which are the top five types of each that are grown in UK gardens and allotments.
I'd love to hear your views.
Thanks,
David

Hi David, and welcome.

I think the answers to your question are going to be many and varied, as we all have our own personal tastes and favourite veg. For me, if I can only choose five, the ones I couldn't be without are as follows:-
Home grown strawberries - nothing to beat the taste.
Ditto - home grown raspberries.
Fresh runner beans, straight from the plot.
The first new potatoes.
Fresh peas, mostly eaten raw before they even leave the plot.

It’s a bit tricky giving a talk if you don’t know much about the subject   ::)

I agree with Aunty.

The sad fact is that almost every single vegetable or variety of fruit has its own pest and diseases, often many and varied. One has to choose to deal with them organically or use pesticides, which aren't ideal on any crop that is going to be eaten.
I think the subject would require an entire series of talks to be covered sufficiently.

Good luck with your project.
