Title: I've got to buy parsnips
Post by: sarajane on December 22, 2012, 09:53
I just don't believe it... In the 30+ years we've had a plot, we've always had home grown parsnips for Christmas.  We eat more roast parsnips than roasters , also mix them with carrots and i've got 12 coming for boxing day lunch.

I thought I'd better go and dig them up this morning before the plot is totally flooded and all I found were 8 little spindly ones from 3 rows.  I've got enough good sprouts but it will take at least 3 of the tiny cabbages floating out there to fill a pan full

I thought I may have parsnips but they are under water  The potatoes may just about last till the new year Then I think its about £9 for a sack  With all this wet I dont even think the ground will dry out for the spring let alone getting chance to dig it over weeds every where They dont even seem to mind the floods

I have the same problem as DD, and the forecast is for rain still so how I will get them up for Christmas dinner I do not know.

I am sorry you haven't got any Sara Jane. :(

We are quite excited 'cos this is the first year we have grown them and we have a raised bed full. I can't believe the difference in taste to the shop ones. I thnk we will be OK digging them up as they are in raised beds.

Our friend on the next lotty wasn't so succesful sowing direct in the ground though. So we shared.

First time for brussels too and we have some, but they are grape sized. Will try to better with those next year, although I suspect sabotage from the OH who hates them. :D

The taste really is far superior Mrs Ball.  Enjoy yours.

I met a plot neighbour coming back from the shops and he said he will be down tomorrow to get his and would I like some.  I had to break the news to him he may well need a plunger rather than a fork and his plot like many others is under water.

You can have one of mine any time, and you're welcome!

We swap ours for eggs, and they come from the rosey chaps (esses) we hear every day down at the Patch!

No 254 bus from T. Wells reaches us, and then call out...

Oh Sarajane that is so frustrating isn't it,same sort of thing happened to me a couple of years ago, they were frozen in the ground 2 years running & I had to buy them. Last year I was swapping plots & all the over wintering veg was in the plot I was giving up, so I dug them up & heeled them in the new one & then froze some (freezer),it worked well so last week I dug some up & froze them just in case.

I did that a couple of years ago snowdrops when snow was forecast.

I did have a couple of good size snips a couple of weeks ago so there may be some there and I coudn't find them.  To be honest I was getting really fed up as everywhere I dug just filed in with water

Sorry to hear you have to buy parsnips this year sarajane. :(

Prompted by this thread, I thought it best to check ours are OK and I'm happy to report that the samples pulled are fine and one is 27 inches long. :D

Mine were grown for far too long in modules and have not got much deeper than tennis balls in length - but their width isn't too bad.  Better than nothing!

You're probably on a winner then, Yorkie, as they're very difficult to get out in this swampy weather!

Went down for 'snip digging today as I was getting worried, but luckily as our plot is not one of the lowest, we are not under water ....yet?????

Dug up some decent ones, plus the best carrots for years - albeit only a few from a June sowing: the July sowing is still very tiny and may stay that way of course.

Several plots are inches deep in water and the ater meadows beyond are flooded too

I feel sorry for those with plots under water --it must be very disheartening indeed

Well done you Arugula.  I will use the pitiful thin specimens I have and mix 'em with the bought ones.  Wonder if anyone can tell the difference.

So sorry for those of you who can't even get to your plot to see what you have.

pulled my yesterday but still suffer from canker.

They look very edible to me - nothing a vegetable peeler won't soon cure. I bet, if they've had the frost on them, they'll be wonderfully sweet too.  :)

I'm so impressed with myself for my parsnips this year :)

It's my first ever attempt at growing them and I did everything you're  not supposed to do, but I lifted some more today and they're fantastic. The ones I lifted today had a usable length of about 18 inches (I didn't bother with the spindly bit) and are straight and perfectly white, not a mark on them. I wasn't expecting much of this crop but I'm really pleased with them, definitely be doing them again next year. It almost makes up for having to buy sprouts because mine have stayed the same size for weeks and weeks, and just refused to get any bigger.

Parsnips seem quite cheap in the shops at the moment but I'd be surprised if they had the same taste as home-grown ones.

a bit of a fiddle come preparation for sure .... But, we broadcast sowed the parsnips this year (into a tiny 3x3 space, or there abouts ) ..... chip size  :)
