Its always been cold enough round here to plant till the end of february at least, and the weather forecast for the weekend will make sure they get the cold spell!!

I suppose whatever people say, the way to look at it is.....if you plant some now the least that should happen is a smaller crop...whereas if you dont plant them you wont have anything at all.
If you think it can't get any worse, you just lack sufficient imagination.

There different types of garlic for planting at different times from Autumn through to Spring, one of the main reason for planting early is so they have a cold snap, it is believed this makes them split. If by chance they don't you will end up with rather large cloves rather than bulbs but its not the end of the world, dry them as normal and re-plant in the Autumn and get some whoppers the following year or just eat them. My self I always plant a few late for this very reason, so to sum up, no its not too late as I reckon this year we will be getting some good snaps yet to come so get them in the ground.

I missed out on the autumn planting garlic so ordered the spring planting variety.  It arrived today.  As we appear to be expecting snow - here in the SE anyway -  I'll be planting it out tomorrow.   It'll be interesting to see if it performs as well as my usual autumn planted crop.

My soil is terribly wet, still - can I start the garlic in 3" pots, and plant it out either once it's growing well or once the clay is soil rather than mud?

I've got some in pots in the greenhouse ready to join what has already been planted on the plot.  I usually do some this way and slot it in where the Autumn planted ones have failed.  Best of both worlds!

I'm gonna attempt planting mine this week.

Last year being my first, I read up on planting garlic and followed instructions to plant each clove an inch deep but I was watching a youtube vid the other night and the girl just pushed the cloves into the soil like onion sets, leaving the top tip exposed......

what do you guys do?

Sorry for the blatent thread hijack

Mine go an inch down, but certainly not planted like onion sets.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Every gardening magazine I have read  give different planting depts for garlic. I plant mine 1in. deep and I always get good results. Garlic needs a cold spell in order to break dormancy, makes sence not to plant too deep.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I had to move some garlic that I had planted late last year to make way for a new greenhouse, It was growing really well with about four inches of green growth. I replanted and covered it with plastic as we were expecting snow which arrived last week.  I braved the cold and removed the snow from the plastic but the garlic leaves look a bit flattened.  My question is will they perk up and should I remove the plastic or keep it in place till the weather warms up a bit?
