Title: Turbo cider experiment - first results
Post by: Casey76 on July 05, 2012, 20:57
All in the name of science, you understand ;)

Tonight I set three lots of TC off...

1) el cheapo apple juice from concentrate
2) "normal" apple juice from concentrate
3) pure apple juice (not from concentrate)

Made up the yeast + additives in a separate jar, and pitched all at the same time.

Will be interesting to see how they turn out (at Christmas ;) )

I doubt you'll taste much of a difference.  Not after the first glass  ::)

But in the interests of science..
1) Are there any differences in the nutritional values on the bottle/carton between the juices? - specifically the sugar content?
2) What have you added? - sugar, tanin, acid?

I have the nutritional info stored, and can post it tonight.  there is quite a difference between the sugar levels, and before I added the tannin, there was quite a difference in colour too.

I used Youngs cider yeast (green packet), plus 1tsp pectolase, 1tsp yeast nutrient, 1tsp malic acid and 1/2tsp of tannin per 4.5L juice (to be topped up to 5L once initial "whoosh" has calmed down.)

No added sugar, I like to drink cider as a refresher on an afternoon... no need to send me to sleep lol ;)

Should be a good refreshing brew when finished  :D

My recipe is a little simpler - AJ, sugar, cold tea (for the tannin), 1 tsp citric acid (or juice of a lemon if there's one about) and Youngs cider yeast.  I have done a TC-zero with no added sugar, it's very drinkable.  With the added sugar version I just dilute with apple juice in the glass if needed.

Woo hoo...

First bottle opened

Lovely crisp clean taste; very dry.

Verdict... wouldn't be upset to be served this in a pub  :D

That makes it a *winner* I think!

It was the pure apple juice; simply because it was the first bottle to hand.

I will do a comparison with the others tomorrow :D
