I finally have a workbench for the veg plot
« on: December 29, 2010, 18:09 »
I have been unable to work because of the bad weather, so decided to have a look through the bonfire pile with the view to making a work bench for the veg plot.

This was the result after a mornings work. :)

The base is made from oak with nice chunky 5"x 5" legs with 4" x 3" bottom rails morticed and tennoned into them. The shelf is made from 3"x 1" and the top is made from three 8" x 3" slabs of Douglas fir biscuit jointed and glued together.

Not bad for a bit of old wood which destined to be burnt!

wow you have some nice wood in your wood burning stock - ours consists of keroin (sp?) from old lorry bodies and a mixture of hardwood and softwood window and door frames.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I'm very lucky when it comes to 'free' wood.  :)

My workshop is based at a sawmill, so I'm always able to hunt and scrounge for wood that can't be sold. :) I let nothing go to waste!

That's a proper job.
Reminds me of an old butchers block. :)

don't the butchers blocks have the grain end on though? or is that the modern way?

if you do decide to make a proper butchers block make the top at least 4 inches deep (deeper preferably) but using grain end you can use smaller (in diameter) off cuts  :D. I would love a traditional butchers block but a real one costs a fortune for the size I would like (big enough for half a pig or 1/4 of a cow).

joyfull,

I think that Gwizz was refering to the rough shape, more than anything else. :)

You are correct though, and it would need to be framed around the top as well. I have an idea that they use beech for them, but I could be wrong?

That's right Eddie. It's shape reminded me of a butchers block.
I reckon that bench would take any amount of tamping down[/i ]of  the compost in a pot ;)

That certainly is a nice table, Eddie. And that must be some woodpile you've got access to  :D If I had access to it, I suspect I'd be too busy building things to garden  :D :D

Thanks. :D

Ref the woodpile.. This lot was recently being thrown away, so I had to come to the rescue!!!

I also built this shed from scrap materials. The only cost was ballast and cement to make the concrete base. Even the windows were free. :)

Behind the shed is  a logstore that has a roof made from the ends of an old industrial unit and once again, salvaged wood.

This was the old logstore!!!!!!!

fantastic, can't blame you for having to rescue the off cuts  :D
you could make something like this oak edged butchers block :-

would suit me down to the ground  :D

I'm in the wrong job!!!

I've also just had a quick look on Ebay at them, and there's two beech blocks mounted onto stainless bases. It's almost worth buying one of them, changing the base, and sell it on again. :D
