Withdrawn Eggs
« on: September 11, 2011, 12:04 »
My chooks have been a bit sniffly recently, and we think it is mycoplasma, so have treated them accordingly.  However, the egg withdrawal period is 28 days.  It is only day 13 and we have 60 eggs!  What should we do with them?  Thank you- we're at a loss as they all had to be done and the eggs are clogging up the side now!

What antibiotic are you using? If it's Tylan soluble the advice note that came with mine says that there is no egg withdrawal. Unfortunately, if it's not Tylan, then all you can do really is throw them away as it would not even be safe to feed the eggs to any pets you may have as you would be feeding them antibiotic.

Although I'm not sure if you could boil them and feed them back to your birds

I didn't think there was an egg withdrawal period with Baytril or aureomycin either?  so like Helenaj said, which A/B is it?

I think there is with Baytril as I was discussing this antibiotic with my vet when some of my girls had Myco in the past. She looked it up in their medicinal register.

We used baytril, and I'm not sure about feeding them back to them as they had something wrong, and don't want to get it back into their system!

Recently we had a large feed contamination in NZ and a lot of backyard keepers had to throw away their eggs for a couple of weeks. :(

Some people gave their eggs to the local pest-control people to bait traps (we have a lot of egg-eating pests that need to be eliminated here, including stoats, rats, hedgehogs and Australian possums).

I gave some of mine to a local play-centre where they used them for science experiments, including putting them in jars of vinegar to watch the shells dissolve.

It does seem such a waste to throw egg away.  I hope you find something useful to do with them. :)
