Acidic loving ground cover?
« on: September 20, 2011, 21:53 »
hi all, I have a cople of 2yr old Blueberry bushes on the way and I have a raised bed wll prepared fpr them. My problem is "What can I plant with them as ground cover"?
I've done a bit of research but I'm getting conflicting info from different sites and am a bit lost, any help would be appreaciated.
I would also appreciate any recomendations on other acidic loving (low growing) plants that may compliment the bed. something evergreen would be great.

Thnx.

Although blueberries won't smother weeds like their cousins the native bilberry they are quite shallow-rooted and relatively low-growing bushes which like plenty of moisture, so I don't think they either need or would appreciate the competition of underplanting.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I was told to do a deep mulch under mine to retain water (by Mr. Muir no less!) so underplanting wouldn't be suitable.
Don't forget to net them off....the birds will have them!

A mulch of pine needles would be perfect  :D

You could always edge the bed with some heathers :)

How about cranberries? There low growing and scramble over the ground That's what I put under mine and they're very happy, although not much fruit on the cranberries yet. I might upload a photo later if I get round to it.

I grow cranberries with my blueberries, but my ground is usually quite moist in Glasgow.

I mulch my raised bed with leafmold - not so far found a legal source of pine needles - so i chuck on a handful of sulphur chips as insurance. A few weeds do germinate but they pull out easily from the leafmold. I usually plant garlic bulbils around the edge of this bed - they seem to do ok in the acidic conditions and are not too deep rooted

TY for the replies.
I was gonna mulch with pine needles but as others have stated, I can't find a source.
TY for the heads up with cranberries and garlic sounds intersting.

I'd still be intereste to hear from anyone who has had sucess with plants around their blueberries, either bi-annuals or perenials...... something that wont do the blueberries any harm.
The bed I have set out may look a little bare if I don't add something.
