It's because they are jungle fowl and when laying an egg they need to keep in touch with the rest of the flock.  While they are laying they keep quiet so that predators don't find them. When they have finished the rush away from  their nest and shout "Where are you!" to the other hens.

I'm going to go with it's the chookese equivalent of;

"OW you ruddy bu**ering egg, ow ow ow owwwww my backside. I hate doing this every morning... WHYYYYY...Ahhhhhh it's out. Bring on those snails!"

But i asked this of someone knowlegeable of chooks in the wild and it's near enough word for word what Sally's just said.

 :lol:  :lol:  :lol:  I couldn't agree more, I'd certainly make a song and dance if I had to pass a great big hard egg out of my backside every morning :lol:

I asked the same question of my Dad today. I just have my first girls but my Dad and Grandad used to keep them. My Dad said it was to announce where they were once they had laid (after keeping quiet) so they could all get back togther. Not sure if this is correct, just what he said.

At least they dont have stupid cockerals trying to mop their brows, being totally useless, saying "push..push"
Oh what I would have done to have had my girls in a nice quiet nesting box...with drugs of course!

Someone told me (can't remember who) that it was to let the cockerel know that the egg was laid and it was time to get the next one fertilised.  How true this is Ihave no idea :D

Not true I'm afraid.  Once mated the hen will lay fertile eggs for quite a while.  A month or so I think.

Well chickadee - if you have ever given birth yourself you would know why the noise is necessary!!!  :shock:
Humans also add swearing - usually at the proud father!  :wink:

Goodness I didn't realise that the deed lasted as long as a month! Is it the same for ducks? if so our new duckw could still be laying fertile eggs?? shame the broody is only just finishing one lot of chicks....

Yep, may well still be fertile :lol:
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
