Question about moulting
« on: May 09, 2008, 14:28 »
Hi,  my three black rocks are over a year old now and have not yet moulted, I've checked my many books on chiockens and they all state that the hens should moult when they are about a year old and each year thereafter.

Is this true or do they not moult in the first year?
The weather is so good at the moment I think they would be glad to get rid of their feathers and cool off a bit!

Not necessarily in their first year -if they were hatched say march/april this year they wouldn't moult this autumn but probably at the end of summer next year. Aso birds dont moult in the spring but either late summer or autumn so after their natural laying season has finished and the days are starting to get shorter. Hope this helps!

Thanks for that, they were hatched 14/2/07 (Valentines Girls) so I guess they will moult the end of the Summer!  :)
