Quick question re Moulting - I think!
« on: December 17, 2012, 13:29 »
3 of my hens have just gone through a heavy Moult and no longer look oven ready, just a bit patchy now.  However I have also noticed a lot of dry skin at the bottom of the Coop when I clean them out, it looks like leg skin, but could be wrong?

I gave them all a good looking over yesterday and all seems OK and their legs do not look sore but have smooth soft skin covering their legs now.

I am more than likely being paronoid but is this normal when they are moulting or should I be worried and looking for something that could be wrong?

Any feedback would be welcomed !

The dry skin is probably the sheath off the new feathers and quite normal .

When I hatched my first lot of chicks and they started to grow I wondered what all the dandruff was.  A quick search online put my mind at rest that it was normal.

They replace the scale bits on their legs. To prevent scaly leg mite you can smear in vasaline.
