Title: breeding
Post by: Debbieta on December 16, 2012, 14:04
I wonder if anyone could advise.
I have a cream legbar cockerel and a rir cockerel along with hens which are light sussex, welsummer, rir, ancona, cuckoo maran, cream legbar and orpington.
Would anyone know what the crosses of these would be.
Yes I know a rir with an rir will still be an rir , and a legbar and legbar still make ... a legbar , but what about the other variations as I will be crossing some but wondered which would poss make the best combinations

they will hybrids but some hybrids are RIR x with another breed such as the blackrock which I believe is a RIR x barred plymouth rock. However you need to know which way round these need to be such as which breed is the cockerel  :)

I have the choice of rir or legbar cockerals to cross with any of the above, but not sure what I'll end up with.  As the cream legbar would be auto sexing normally, would it still be auto sexing when crossed with any other chick.  Can anyone give any tips generally when trying to cross breed chicks. Many thanks

I have seen adverts for RIR x Welsummer which have said they lay brown speckled eggs.  Also found some eggs advertised on www.backyardchickens.com for the same cross with a photo.

Joyfull is right that the Black Rock is RIR (cockerel) x Barred Plymouth Rock (hen).

Good luck with your breeding program.
