We have a couple growing in the garden, and the "lawn" produces shoots on a regular basis.
We have one "tree" which is about 15' tall

These might be of use.

Hi there.

chris, japonica is usually an ornamental. The ones you make jelly out of are Cydonia oblonga.

Gavin - Yes, they can get quite big but you can control the size by pruning them back. Size will also depend on the rootstock used. Quince A will be slightly bigger and Quince C a bit smaller. Those planted on pyrus rootstocks can be rather large!

I planted a quince (vranja) on Quince A over the winter. When planted it was a maiden whip, about halfway up my thigh. Its now getting on for 7 feet with a few branches too!

Plant as you would an apple tree. Dig the biggest deepest widest hole you can, mix the earth with loads of compost or manure. Stake. Water frequently.

Quince is normally self fertile so you dont need a second one to pollinate, though that would help with yields.

No fruit from mine this year. Fingers crossed for spring!

Thanks for the tips... I bought a Serbian Gold ( Quince A root stock) yesterday. A 3 year old tree about 9' high in a big pot... dug out a fir tree and will prepare a nice big hole over the next few days to plant it in...  Have ordered another Meeches Prolific to be delivered bare rooted in a few months so will get digging for that and prepare now also..  I can already taste the Quince jelly!!   :D

Might just be worth double checking the pH of the soil near where the fir tree came out.  Conifer needles are quite acidic I think.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
