I'm another Newbie. This is my first year of having an allotment - actually, a 3/4 plot plus a nearly 1/4 plot and so far it's been very hard work, but satisfying. I decided to get rid of the globe artichokes that are taking up an awful lot of space and preventing sun/rain from reaching nearby plantings, and after harvesting the crop have spent this morning hacking down the leaves and stems. I've discovered the roots are very difficult to remove - any advice gratefully received.

Hi Mirelle and welcome to the forum  :D  I hope you don't mind but I moved your first post to make your own thread, so that you can have answers to your questions. If you add your location into your profile, any answers will be "fine tuned" to roughly where you live --- growing conditions vary hugely across our membership.

Globe artichokes are very deep rooted, and a pickaxe could be useful!

Hope your first season is going well with lots to harvest now.

Welcome to the site  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for such a warm welcome.  Hmm, yes - those roots go down very deep, don't they!  Have managed to rip one apart and remove most of it, but this will be a challenge, I think. However, the plot looks much larger now that massive hedge of foliage has gone. And I hope I'll be able to plant more beetroot, carrots and leeks in the space it occupied.
