Nearly everything is rotting on my plot
« on: July 05, 2012, 19:49 »
300 onions with downy mildew in the last week, all strawberries wiped out by leather rot, Beetroot and Spinach did not germinate, potatoes showing first signs of blight, Broad Beans all infected with Rust, herb seedlings stunted.

Crossing my fingers about the Swede, Peas, Runners, Blackberries, lettuce and Carrots.

How I wished I lived Suffolk or Norfolk, Cardiff has had terrible summers over the last several years.

Oh dear.  Unfortunately I think most of us have possibly had the worst year ever with our crops.  Dont let it put you off though.  2013 might bring us a proper summer.

Well I'm in Essex and I'm not much better off.  Downy mildew on all of my onions & shallots.  Rust on all of my garlic.  Just waiting for blight to strike soon (weather forecast looks about perfect for it).  But as sarajane said, it's just one of those years.  You never know mid/later summer might be nice and provide us with a bumper crop of runners, french beans, sweetcorn and courgettes (ever year is a bumper year for courgettes  )  If not, well always next year or the year after or...........

Actually, in last year's dismal summer even my courgettes failed, and that's a first :)

Hello from Suffolk!  The news isn't great from here either; major snail & slug damage to peas and beans, lettuce, when and if they manage to germinate, and minimal growth on literally everything.  Early strawberries have offered me one ripe fruit so far.  Think I'll just plant rice!
