Transporting Chickens
« on: May 16, 2009, 13:18 »
What is the preffered way to transports chickens?

I have 4 pullets ordered and was in tending on putting all 4 in my dogs cage in the car. I was planning on taking the dogs bedding out, newspaper on the tray, and then through a cover over it to keep it dark.

Is this OK?

Or would I be better trying to seperate them on the journey somehow?

Sound OK. I have always traveld mine in a carbourd box with straw in. Save them sliding about as the straw acts as a buffer. I then can through the box away if it is too smelly. Oh I always put large holes in the top of the sides of the box so the birds have access to air.

That a good idea about the straw Roughlee, I'll maybe see if I can do something like that in the cage.

I'm not worried about it smelling, it's only a removeable metal tray in bottom of cage, very easy to clean. I'll maybe see if I can get some cardboard to line it up the sides a bit though to hold the straw in.

Hi only problem with using dog cages and straw is if they panic and flap about you and inside of car get covered in poop and straw

They don't need too much room as they can sometimes fall and hurt their legs if you brake suddenly or go roind corners a bit fast.  They are better having just enough room to sit side by side and as Henry says, they will lay down and sleep anyway, with the occasional cheepcheep!!

I always travel mine in paper sacks 1 to a sack with the top lighly rolled down, this way they are secure and get air and it is dark so no problems, if going a long way I use a cat box with straw or paper in the bottom and depends on what size the chooks are 1 or 2 to a cat box.
