Very early leeks
« on: May 14, 2012, 19:02 »
Has anyone ever grown leeks that can be harvested in June/July?

My plot neighbours had some last year, and Mr Sunny was rather jealous tbh

So this year I have got hold of some that were sown in October and overwintered just frost free.

Planted them out on Saturday (seemed odd tbh as I usually don't plant mine out until about end of June)

Anyone grown these early sorts? These are Volta

DD's leeks are usually big enough to harvest before he plants them out KC, so he may have an idea what to do...;0)

We're trying 'Elefant' this year, and germination has been pretty poor, so perhaps they'll be ready by June next year!

If you sow them in January you can harvest them in May but they might not be very big.  ;)

On the other hand you could just leave em in the ground after a normal planting and harvest them before they go to seed the following year.

I grow Zermatt for an early crop but they are not ready before August

I always grow a packet of Mr F's Kingston F1, theyre about the earliest ive managed to find.
I sow them end of jan/start of feb and theyre ready early july-i adore leeks and grow hundreds each year and these taste just as good as the ones grown at more traditional times.
Mine this year were planted out may 1st, a tad later than usual due to the lovely weather!

I'm growing some Jaune do Poitou this year, which are a golden coloured early leek ready from August if all goes well.  I sowed these together with my winter leeks on 8th March and have 2 pots of seedlings now thickening up nicely.

May well have some extra plants when I come to plant out, if you want me to save you some to try Sunshine  :)
